This course starts with the basics of accounting, an introduction to accounting terminology, the accounting equation, T accounts and understanding Debits and Credits. You will learn to set up both a manual and computerized double entry bookkeeping system for a small business, record business transactions, maintain sub-ledger accounts and balances, and prepare and analyze a business’s Balance Sheet and Income Statement for an accounting cycle. Businesses today use computerized accounting software and with this course you will be introduced to setting up and using the General Journal on the Simply Accounting by Sage 2010 software (student version software provided, if required).
This course is designed for individuals who have no previous accounting and bookkeeping knowledge or for individuals who are currently in a bookkeeping position and would like to refresh or strengthen their accounting knowledge.

- Business owners, support staff, bookkeepers
- Anyone who wants to understand the basics of bookkeeping and Simply Accounting
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Windows
- No previous experience using Simply Accounting required
- Participants must provide headset with microphone connected to USB port (or acceptable alternative) for online audio

Accounting Basics by Sage
- Class demonstrations use Simply Accounting 2009. Simply Accounting Student Edition will be provided to participants who don't have Simply Accounting. If you have a licenced version of Simply Accounting 2008, 2009 or 2010, you will use your own version.
- An agenda, supporting materials and documents for each session will be emailed to particpipants and should be printed and available during class sessions.
- Each session includes an exercise to reinforce learning. Exercise take approximately 1 hour to complete. Exercises are reviewed by the instructor and feedback will be provided.
- Recordings of class sessions are available to participants for review or in case of a missed session.
- Participants are encouraged to ask questions during class. The instructor is also available to answer questions between classes.
